Registering as an Amazon India seller is free and, on paper, takes under an hour. In practice, the difference between a same-week approval and a month of support tickets is almost always the same thing: documents that don’t match each other. This guide lists exactly what you need, in what form, and the realistic timeline for each step. (It’s part of our complete Amazon seller guide — start there if you’re at the very beginning.)

The Document Checklist
1. GSTIN (GST Identification Number) Mandatory for selling in almost every category. Only a small list of GST-exempt goods (certain unbranded/unprocessed items and books, for example) can be sold without it, under Amazon’s GST-exemption flow. Practical points:
- – The GST registration must be in the same legal name you’ll register on Amazon.
- – Composition-scheme GSTINs cannot claim input credit on Amazon’s fees — most sellers register under the regular scheme.
- – If your business address changed, update GST before starting Amazon registration.

2. PAN
- – Proprietorship → the proprietor’s personal PAN.
- – Partnership/LLP/Company → the entity’s PAN.
The name on the PAN must match the GST record. A spelling difference as small as “Pvt Ltd” vs “Private Limited” can trigger manual verification.
3. Bank Account A current account in the business name is strongly recommended (savings accounts work for proprietors but look less credible for reconciliations later). Keep ready: a cancelled cheque or a bank statement/passbook page showing the account holder name, account number and IFSC.
4. Mobile Number & Email Both get OTP-verified and become the account’s identity anchors. Use founder-controlled credentials — never an employee’s personal number. Changing these later is possible but painful.
5. Address Proof For the pickup address: electricity bill, rent agreement, or bank statement usually suffice. The pickup address can differ from your GST address, but the GST state must match where you ship from (or you’ll need an APOB — Additional Place of Business — for FBA warehouses, which Amazon’s FBA flow guides you through).
6. Signature A scan or photo of your signature, needed during the final verification step.
7. (If Branded) Trademark Details Not required for registration itself, but if you plan to apply for Brand Registry immediately after, keep your trademark application number or certificate handy.
The Name-Match Rule (Read This Twice)
Amazon’s verification engine cross-checks GST name ↔ PAN name ↔ bank account name ↔ the legal name you type. The single most common registration failure is a mismatch between any two of these. Before you start, put all four side by side and confirm they’re character-identical. If your bank account says “Sharma Enterprises” and GST says “M/S Sharma Enterprises”, fix the bank record or expect delays.
Step-by-Step Timeline
| Step | Time (done right) |
|---|---|
| Creating the account, OTP verifications | 15 minutes |
| GST + PAN entry and auto-verification | Same day (instant to a few hours) |
| Store name, pickup address, shipping setup | 15 minutes |
| Bank verification | 1–2 business days |
| Identity/address verification (if triggered) | 2–7 business days |
| Total: listing-ready | Typically 2–7 business days |
With mismatched documents, add two to four weeks of appeal-and-resubmit cycles — which is precisely the delay a professional registration service exists to prevent. We prepare the document set, run the flow, and handle verification exceptions; most client accounts are listing-ready inside a week.
After Approval: Three Things Before Your First Listing
- 1. Set your bank deposit method and verify a test settlement — payment issues are easier to fix before revenue depends on them.
- 2. Check category permissions — if your products fall in a gated category (jewellery, food, cosmetics, toys and others), start the approval process now; you’ll need invoices and sometimes images/compliance certificates.
- 3. Decide fulfillment — FBA enrollment needs its own small setup (and an APOB in GST for the warehouse state, which we handle as part of registration engagements).
Common Rejection Reasons (and Fixes)
- – “Documents could not be verified” → almost always a name/address mismatch. Fix the underlying record; don’t just resubmit the same files.
- – Blurry/cropped uploads → re-scan at full page, all corners visible.
- – GSTIN inactive or cancelled → check your GST portal status first.
- – Previously linked account → if your phone/email/bank ever touched another seller account (even a relative’s), expect a related-account review. Be truthful; denial makes it worse.
The Bottom Line
Registration is a documents game. Get GST, PAN and bank records aligned before you start, and Amazon’s process is genuinely fast. Get them wrong and you’ll spend weeks in verification loops while competitors take the sales.
