You’ve registered as a seller, you’re ready to list — and Amazon says “You need approval to sell in this category.” Welcome to gating. This guide covers why it exists, which categories are commonly gated on Amazon India, and how to get approved the first time. (Part of our complete Amazon seller guide.)

Why Amazon Gates Categories
Gating exists to protect buyers from counterfeit, unsafe or non-compliant products in sensitive categories — and to protect Amazon from the regulatory consequences. For sellers, it’s a moat: yes, approval is friction, but once you’re in, you compete against fewer sellers than in open categories. Treat gating as an opportunity check, not just an obstacle.
Commonly Gated / Restricted Categories on Amazon India
- – Jewellery (especially fine jewellery — hallmarking and sourcing scrutiny)
- – Watches (brand authorization for branded watches)
- – Beauty & personal care / cosmetics (regulatory compliance, expiry management)
- – Food & grocery (FSSAI licence mandatory)
- – Health, nutrition & supplements (FSSAI + label compliance)
- – Toys (BIS certification requirements)
- – Electronics accessories in certain brands (brand gating rather than category gating)
- – Automotive parts (fitment data expectations)
- – Branded goods generally — even in open categories, listing against a registered brand’s ASIN can require brand authorization (invoice from the brand or authorized distributor)
The exact list shifts — always check by attempting to list: Seller Central → Add a Product → search your item → “Apply to sell” appears if approval is needed, along with that category’s specific requirements.
What Approval Typically Asks For
1. Purchase invoices (the big one). Usually 1–3 invoices, dated within the last 90–180 days, from a manufacturer or authorized distributor, showing:
- – your business name and address exactly as on your seller account,
- – the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN,
- – at least 10 units per invoice (commonly),
- – clearly identifiable products matching what you’re applying to sell.
Retail receipts, self-generated invoices and “pro forma” invoices are the classic rejection causes.
2. Product images. Real photos of the actual product (not brand stock images) — all sides, packaging, labels, batch/expiry where relevant.
3. Compliance documents by category:
- – Food/supplements → FSSAI licence
- – Toys → BIS certification
- – Cosmetics → label compliance, importer licence for imported goods
- – Branded products → brand authorization letter from the brand/authorized distributor
4. Sometimes: a website or catalog showing you’re a genuine business in this line.
The Approval Process, Step by Step
- 1. In Seller Central, find your product → “Apply to sell”.
- 2. Read the requirement list for that category — requirements differ by category and even sub-category.
- 3. Prepare documents to the letter: names matching, dates fresh, images real.
- 4. Submit and track under Selling Applications.
- 5. Typical response: 24 hours to 7 days. Rejections come with (vague) reasons.
Why Applications Get Rejected — and the Fixes
- – Invoice name mismatch → supplier invoice must show your exact registered business name. Get the invoice corrected; don’t argue with the reviewer.
- – Supplier fails verification → Amazon may call your supplier or check their GSTIN. Buy from suppliers who answer their phone and whose GST records are current.
- – Recycled/edited documents → any suspicion of a doctored invoice risks not just rejection but account review. Never.
- – Stock-photo “product images” → shoot real photos on your phone; authenticity beats polish here.
- – Wrong sub-category application → applying under the wrong node gets auto-mismatched against your invoices. Match the invoice items to the exact category you request.
If you’ve been rejected 2-3 times, stop resubmitting the same package — each low-quality resubmission makes the next review harsher. Rework the documents properly (or have someone who does this weekly, like our registration team, audit the package before it goes in).
After Approval
Approval is per-category (sometimes per-brand). Requirements continue: FSSAI/BIS must stay current, and expiry-dated products need proper batch management or you’ll collect account-health hits. Build the listing right the first time too — a gated category with weak competition is exactly where professional listing optimization pays back fastest.
The Bottom Line
Category approval is a documents-and-details game with an outsized reward: less competition on the other side. Prepare invoices that match your account name, from suppliers who verify, with real photos and current licences — and you’ll clear most gates within a week.
