Export the list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Export Search Console data.<\/strong> Twelve months of queries, pages, clicks and impressions. Once the property changes, historical page-level data gets harder to work with.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Record current rankings<\/strong> for your top 50 commercial keywords.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Export your backlink profile.<\/strong> You need to know which specific pages have earned links \u2014 those are the ones a broken redirect will cost you most.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Note your baseline traffic and revenue<\/strong> by month, so &#8220;did it work&#8221; is a number and not a feeling.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Skipping this step is why so many post-migration arguments are unresolvable.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"build-the-redirect-map\">Build the Redirect Map<\/h2>\n<p>This is the whole job. Everything else is smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Take your crawl of old URLs and map each one to its new Shopify equivalent:<\/p>\n<table class=\"exb-table exb-fade\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Old URL<\/th>\n<th>New Shopify URL<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><code>\/blue-cotton-kurta\/<\/code><\/td>\n<td><code>\/products\/blue-cotton-kurta<\/code><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>\/category\/kurtas\/<\/code><\/td>\n<td><code>\/collections\/kurtas<\/code><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><code>\/blog\/how-to-style-a-kurta\/<\/code><\/td>\n<td><code>\/blogs\/news\/how-to-style-a-kurta<\/code><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Rules that matter:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"exb-check exb-fade\">\n<li><strong>One-to-one wherever possible.<\/strong> Redirecting everything to the homepage is the same as deleting it, as far as rankings go.<\/li>\n<li><strong>301, never 302.<\/strong> Permanent redirects pass equity; temporary ones do not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No chains.<\/strong> Old \u2192 new, directly. Not old \u2192 intermediate \u2192 new.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discontinued products<\/strong> redirect to the closest equivalent product, or to the parent collection. Not the homepage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not forget<\/strong> blog posts, static pages, and any old URLs that already had redirects on the previous site \u2014 those redirect targets need to survive too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shopify accepts bulk redirect uploads via CSV. Build the map in a spreadsheet, then upload it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"content-parity\">Content Parity<\/h2>\n<p>Do not use a migration as an excuse to rewrite everything at once. If you change platform <em>and<\/em> all your content <em>and<\/em> your site structure in one week, and traffic drops, you will never know which change caused it.<\/p>\n<p>Carry over:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"exb-check exb-fade\">\n<li>Product titles and descriptions<\/li>\n<li>Collection copy (and if the old category pages had no copy, this is the moment to add it \u2014 but do it as a deliberate second phase)<\/li>\n<li>Meta titles and descriptions<\/li>\n<li>Image alt text<\/li>\n<li>Blog posts, in full<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Migrate first. Improve after, once you have a stable baseline.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"pre-launch-checks\">Pre-Launch Checks<\/h2>\n<p>Run these on the staging store before it goes live:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"exb-check exb-fade\">\n<li><strong>Password page removed<\/strong> at launch, and not before<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>noindex<\/code> removed<\/strong> from the staging store&#8217;s settings<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canonicals<\/strong> point to clean <code>\/products\/<\/code> URLs, not collection-scoped duplicates<\/li>\n<li><strong>Product schema<\/strong> validates in Google&#8217;s Rich Results Test<\/li>\n<li><strong>Analytics and Search Console<\/strong> installed and verified on the new setup<\/li>\n<li><strong>Redirect map uploaded<\/strong> and spot-checked on 20 random old URLs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mobile rendering<\/strong> on a real phone<\/li>\n<li><strong>Checkout tested<\/strong> end to end with a live payment method<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"launch-day\">Launch Day<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"exb-steps exb-fade\" style=\"counter-reset:exbstep 0\">\n<li>Point DNS.<\/li>\n<li>Immediately test 20\u201330 old URLs from your map. Every one should land on the right new page with a single 301.<\/li>\n<li>Submit the new sitemap in Search Console.<\/li>\n<li>Request indexing for your top 10 money pages.<\/li>\n<li>Watch the Coverage\/Pages report for 404 spikes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"the-first-four-weeks\">The First Four Weeks<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Expect a dip.<\/strong> Even a clean migration usually loses 10\u201320% of organic traffic for two to four weeks while Google recrawls and reassigns signals. That is normal. Recovery to baseline, then above it, is the expected shape.<\/p>\n<p>What to do during it:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"exb-check exb-fade\">\n<li>Check the 404 report every few days and add redirects for anything you missed \u2014 there is always something.<\/li>\n<li>Watch which old URLs Google is still crawling; they tell you what it has not yet transferred.<\/li>\n<li>Do not panic-change things. Constant edits during recrawl make the dip longer, not shorter.<\/li>\n<li>Compare against your baseline export, not against last week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When to actually worry:<\/strong> if traffic is still down more than 25% after six weeks, something is structurally wrong \u2014 usually a large block of URLs with no redirect, or a <code>noindex<\/code> left in place.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"the-mistakes-that-cost-the-most\">The Mistakes That Cost the Most<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"exb-check exb-fade\">\n<li>Launching without a redirect map, planning to &#8220;add them after&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Redirecting everything to the homepage<\/li>\n<li>Leaving the staging store&#8217;s <code>noindex<\/code> on after launch<\/li>\n<li>Changing platform, content and structure simultaneously<\/li>\n<li>Not exporting Search Console data before the switch<\/li>\n<li>Forgetting the blog entirely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Migration is one of the few SEO jobs where the damage is immediate and hard to reverse.
