This guide covers what actually fails and what actually fixes it. (Part of our <a href=\"\/blogs\/shopify-seo-guide-india\/\">complete Shopify SEO guide<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"the-three-metrics-plainly\">The Three Metrics, Plainly<\/h2>\n<p><strong>LCP \u2014 Largest Contentful Paint.<\/strong> How long until the main thing on screen appears. On a Shopify product page that is usually the hero image. Target: under 2.5 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INP \u2014 Interaction to Next Paint.<\/strong> How quickly the page responds when someone taps. Replaced FID. Heavy JavaScript is the usual culprit. Target: under 200 milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLS \u2014 Cumulative Layout Shift.<\/strong> How much the page jumps around while loading. Images without dimensions and late-injected banners cause it. Target: under 0.1.<\/p>\n<p>Measure on <strong>mobile<\/strong>, on a real page, not just the homepage. Homepage, a collection and a product page fail in different ways.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"why-shopify-stores-fail\">Why Shopify Stores Fail<\/h2>\n<h3>1. App bloat (the big one)<\/h3>\n<p>Every app injects scripts into every page. Reviews, chat, upsells, popups, loyalty, analytics \u2014 ten apps and your theme is loading a megabyte of JavaScript before the buyer sees a product.<\/p>\n<p>Worse: uninstalling an app often leaves its script tags behind in the theme. We routinely find stores loading code from apps removed a year ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> list your installed apps, be honest about which ones earn their keep, uninstall the rest, then check <code>theme.liquid<\/code> and your snippets for orphaned script tags.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Oversized images<\/h3>\n<p>Uploading a 3000px, 2MB product photo and letting the browser scale it into a 600px slot means the buyer downloads 2MB to see 600px worth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> resize before upload, use Shopify&#8217;s responsive image tags so the right size is served per device, and lazy-load anything below the fold. Never lazy-load the hero image \u2014 that hurts LCP.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Theme code<\/h3>\n<p>Premium themes ship with sliders, animations and fonts you may not use. Multiple custom font weights alone can cost a second on mobile.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> cut to two font weights, remove unused sections, and stop loading libraries for features you disabled.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Render-blocking scripts<\/h3>\n<p>Chat widgets and tracking pixels rarely need to run before the page paints.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> defer or async everything that is not required for the first render.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"what-to-do-in-order\">What to Do, in Order<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"exb-steps exb-fade\" style=\"counter-reset:exbstep 0\">\n<li><strong>Baseline it.<\/strong> PageSpeed Insights on three page types, mobile. Screenshot the numbers so you can prove improvement later.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audit apps.<\/strong> Biggest win, lowest effort, no code needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fix images.<\/strong> Second biggest win.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove orphaned scripts<\/strong> left by uninstalled apps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Defer non-critical JavaScript.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Trim theme fonts and unused sections.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Re-measure<\/strong>, then check field data in Search Console after four weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"field-data-vs-lab-data\">Field Data vs Lab Data<\/h2>\n<p>PageSpeed Insights shows you two things. The lab score is a simulation, run right now. The <strong>field data<\/strong> (Chrome UX Report) is what real visitors experienced over the past 28 days \u2014 and that is what Google actually uses.<\/p>\n<p>This is why speed work looks like it did nothing for a month. The lab score improves immediately; the field data takes four weeks to catch up. Do not undo good work because the Search Console report has not moved yet.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"what-not-to-bother-with\">What Not to Bother With<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"exb-check exb-fade\">\n<li><strong>Chasing a 100 score.<\/strong> Diminishing returns after green. Get into the green and go back to selling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Speed optimizer&#8221; apps<\/strong> that add another script to fix script bloat. Some help; most are theatre.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AMP.<\/strong> Google deprecated its special treatment. Not worth building for a Shopify store in 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"exb-h2\" id=\"the-honest-ceiling\">The Honest Ceiling<\/h2>\n<p>Shopify controls the platform. You cannot change server response time, you cannot remove Shopify&#8217;s own scripts, and checkout is outside your control.
